Block Assembly: Building the Foundation
The foundation of this quilt is made up of individual blocks that alternate with sashing strips. Each block is a mini canvas for our theme of spreading kindness.
- Prepare the Pieces: Cut out the required pieces as detailed in the “Cutting Requirements” section. Make sure to label and organize them to stay on track.
- Step 1 – Assemble the Center Block: Sew two Piece B rectangles (2 ¾” x 4″) on either side of each fussy-cut Piece A (4″ x 4″) square. Align the pieces carefully and sew with RST (right sides together). Press seams to set them flat.
- Step 2 – Add the Borders: Sew two Piece C rectangles (2 ¾” x 8 ½”) to the top and bottom of the units you just created. This forms a neat frame around each central block.
- Step 3 – Extend the Design: Take two Piece D rectangles (2 ½” x 8 ½”) and sew them to the left and right sides of each framed block.
- Step 4 – Complete the Block: Finally, sew two Piece E rectangles (2 ½” x 12 ½”) to the top and bottom of each unit. You should now have a finished block measuring 12 ½” x 12 ½”. Repeat these steps to create a total of 20 blocks.
Quilt Assembly: Bringing It All Together
- Create Rows: To build each row, sew together five vertical sashing strips (2 ½” x 12 ½”) and four blocks, alternating their positions. You will end up with a row measuring approximately 58 ½” x 12 ½”. Make five rows in total.
- Prepare the Sashing: Sew nine horizontal sashing strips (2 ½” x WOF) together end-to-end. Subcut this long strip into six strips of 2 ½” x 58 ½”.
- Assemble the Quilt Top: Alternating between quilt rows and long sashing strips, sew the rows and sashing strips together from top to bottom. This will form your quilt top, which should measure about 58 ½” x 72 ½”.
Finishing Touches
- Layer and Quilt: Sandwich your quilt top, batting, and backing together. Take your time to smooth out wrinkles and secure the layers with pins or basting spray. Quilt as desired—whether you prefer free-motion quilting or simple straight lines.
- Bind with Love: Using the Navy Colors of Kindness Crayons fabric, cut seven binding strips at 2 ½” x WOF. Sew the strips together, and carefully bind the edges of your quilt.
Additional Tips for Success
- Fussy Cutting with Precision: When cutting the Multi Colors of Kindness Cards fabric for your 4″ squares, take the time to select prints that you love. These central blocks will be the focal point of your quilt.
- Sashing Consistency: Be consistent in aligning and sewing sashing strips to maintain crisp lines in your quilt top.
- Embrace Imperfections: If your measurements or seams aren’t perfect, remember that quilting is about joy and creativity—not just precision.
The Kindness Like Confetti Quilt isn’t just a project; it’s a reflection of the joy and positivity we can bring into our everyday lives. Whether you’re gifting this quilt to someone special or using it as a daily reminder to embrace kindness, every stitch has a purpose. In completing this quilt, you’ve spread kindness through your work, just like confetti in the air.
