Crafting the Blocks

To kick off the assembly of the A Baker’s Dozen quilt, we start by creating basket blocks!

First, take your measured squares, draw a diagonal line on the back of the 3″ polka dot squares.

Next, layer them with the black bark squares and sew along the lines.

Cutting along the diagonal will leave you with so many half-square triangles to play with!

Once you have your triangles, lay out five matching HST units, along with squares and triangles as indicated in the pattern to lay out the basket base.

Watch the magic happen as these shapes transform into blocks—each pass under the sewing machine brings you closer to your vibrant quilt!

Don’t Forget the Appliqués!

Now onto one of my favorite parts, the appliqué!

Applying your contrasting layers enhances the visual interest in the A Baker’s Dozen quilt.

Using the fusible web, trace the patterns onto the web and fuse them to the fabrics.

Don’t hesitate to let your creativity shine through your appliqué choices!

Make sure to finish off your edges with a decorative stitch such as a satin stitch or blanket stitch for that polished look.

It’s like the icing on the cake—the quilt will go from beautiful to breathtaking in just a few steps!

Finishing Touches

Finally, the moment of truth arrives as you add your borders and prepare to bind the A Baker’s Dozen quilt!

Cut your black bark strips for the inner border and sew them around the quilt top.

Next, trim your floral fabric for the outer border and secure it in place.

It’s all falling into place, isn’t it?

Layer your quilt with batting and your backing fabric.

You can quilt it by hand or on the machine, whichever makes your heart sing.

And don’t forget to bind it with love—because the best things in life are worth finishing beautifully!
