Crafting Sentimental Stars

I remember the first time I saw a quilt. I was a young child, visiting my grandmother’s house. Her home was filled with various quilts, each telling a different story. One quilt, in particular, caught my eye. It was a beautiful star quilt, with intricate patterns and a mesmerizing blend of colors. As a child, I was fascinated by the stars in the sky, and seeing them replicated in fabric was nothing short of magical.

Years later, I found myself living in England, where I was introduced to the art of quilting. The memories of my grandmother’s star quilt came flooding back, and I was inspired to create my own. I didn’t create the star quilt pattern, but I’ve certainly added my own touch to it over the years.

Today, I’m excited to share with you a free Sentimental Stars Quilt Pattern. This classic quilt design offers a lot of design options and can be made with a variety of prints or in a two-tone solid version. Let’s dive into the details!

The Sentimental Stars Quilt Pattern

The Sentimental Stars Quilt Pattern is a versatile design that can be adapted to suit your personal style. Whether you prefer a two-tone quilt in solids or a variety of prints, this pattern has got you covered.

The two-tone version of this quilt is made using Riley Blake Confetti Cottons in the colors Dream (blue) and Cloud (white). The combination of blue and white gives the quilt a classic look that never goes out of style. The colors work exceptionally well with a traditional star quilt design.

On the other hand, you can also make this quilt with a variety of prints. For instance, I made a Winter Stars quilt using the Liberty Festive Collection. Changing the fabric can completely transform the look of the quilt, giving it a unique personality.

Materials Required

To create this quilt, you will need:

  • 3 ½ yards of blue fabric
  • 1 ⅝ yards of white fabric
  • 8-12 Fat Quarters (if you’re using a variety of prints)
  • Background fabric (I used Riley Blakes Linen/Cotton blend in Natural)

Crafting Your Sentimental Stars Quilt

The Sentimental Stars Quilt Pattern includes two different interchangeable star quilt blocks – the Sawtooth and the Ribbon Star. You can choose to make all of your blocks one star or another, or a mix of both. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure pattern!

When I made the two-tone collection in solids, I made all of my blocks using the Ribbon Star quilt block for a little more uniformity in design. However, when I made the version with a variety of prints, I decided to make more blocks in the traditional Sawtooth star pattern to show off more of the fabric prints.
