What is the Blooming Love Block?

The Blooming Love block is a unique design that uses half-square triangles and a stitch-and-flip technique to create a pattern that can be interpreted as a four-leaf clover, a simple pinwheel, or even a heart within a flower. The possibilities are endless with this versatile block!

Materials Needed

For this project, you’ll need:

  • Various fabric pieces for your half-square triangles and stitch-and-flip corners
  • A hot iron (no steam)
  • A rotary cutter
  • A square ruler
  • A pencil for marking

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Decide on Your Arrangement

Before you start sewing, decide on the color play and arrangement of your block. You could emphasize one section with a darker color to highlight the heart within the pieces, or you could create a pinwheel effect by keeping one side of the heart a solid color and breaking the other side into two colors.

Step 2: Stitch and Flip

If you haven’t made stitch-and-flip blocks before, it’s pretty easy. A smaller square is added on a corner (right sides together) with a line drawn corner to corner, diagonally. Sew on that line, then trim the corner off. After sewing, make sure you press the flipped corner open before adding the other corner.

Step 3: Make Half Square Triangles

For the half-square triangles in the center part of this block, increase the measurement 1/8th of an inch over what the directions say so your blocks are a little bigger when you make them, then trim up your blocks. You can use a Bloc-Loc ruler to trim your half-square triangles.

Step 4: Trim and Join

You might need to trim up corners on the stitch-and-flip pieces. After trimming all the pieces, join them into rows, then join the rows to complete your Blooming Love block.
